British Life and Culture - #12

We had class again today so we got up and got ready for the day. We wanted to go before class to look at a store called Love, which is really close to our flat. It has clothes that were at Topshop and didn't sell. Anna, Mary, Kelsey, Emily, and I went there around 1:30. We looked around and didn't really find anything so we were pretty disappointed. We decided to head to class even though we were an hour early because we were already out and didn't have anything else to do. On the way, we passed a bunch of lunch places so I ran into one and got a berry smoothie. We walked around that area a little bit before going to class.

Class was from 2:30-4. The topic was multiculturalism and it was fun listing the many ways we see different cultures in London. Anna put it well when she said when she first got here she wanted to have real, authentic British food but after our lecture, she understood that there are so many ethnic restaurants here because many different cultures are prevalent in London. The funniest part to me was talking about how "look left" and "look right" are written on the road at every intersection. A girl said she uses that every single time she crosses the street as her guide and I know I do too. Some people thought they may have put that there for the Olympics since so many foreigners will be here. Our lecturer told us that's not why they are there. He didn't exactly tell us why they're there except for the fact that he doesn't even notice them. We all assumed Londoners know which way to look while crossing the street so we still think the writing on the street is interesting.

After class, a group of us met in the other building to use the computers. We wanted to plan our trip to Paris. After so much frustration and confusion, we finally decided on a hotel. We knew we would have to come back to the other details another day because we had already been there for a while.

Anna, Emily, Kelsey, and I wanted to go eat down by the river tonight. We met up with Lindsey, Victoria, and Emily and headed to the tube station. We got off the tube and walked by the river. We were so close to the London Eye and were right underneath Big Ben! We were starving and couldn't find much to eat on that side of the river so we decided to cross the bridge. As we were crossing, we heard Big Ben chime. It sounded just like it did in Peter Pan! Once we got on the other side, we walked all around and were looking for restaurants. We came across this food market so we decided to try that instead. Emily and I got hamburgers, which were so good and fresh and inexpensive. We all got different things to eat and sat on some steps to eat them. There were some dessert booths too so we just had to get some. Emily and I both got churros for dessert. They came with chocolate to dip them in. They were so good. This was probably my favorite meal so far. We all want to try other food markets now.

After we finished dinner, we walked around that area for a little while. We found the cutest bakery and some of the group got dessert there. We then stopped at a pub, where a few girls got some drinks. Then we just kept exploring and taking pictures of that part of the city. We finally made our way back to the flat and we were all exhausted by the time we got here.
